Christmas Eve was not a fast day (one full meal with meat and two smaller meatless meals with not eating in between) but a day of abstinence(no meat allowed) as were all Fridays. There were days that were kept as both days of fast and abstinence - the Fridays in Lent. And as you mentioned the laws governing fast and abstinence have been modified since Vatican II.
